‚Gayle‘ Ausstellungseröffnung + Artist Talk mit Ryan Jacobs

Wir freuen uns auf die Eröffnung unserer ersten Ausstellung im Blyb. mit Werken des Fotografen Ryan Jacobs. Ryan ist seit letztem Sommer Teil des Blyb. Teams. Darüber hinaus ist er Dokumentarfotograf, geboren in Kapstadt.

Es werden erstmals seine Werke der Fotostrecke ‚Gayle‘ präsentiert und somit ein Teil seiner Kultur, der auf Offenheit und Akzeptanz basiert, sichtbar gemacht.

Ryan dokumentierte über einen Zeitraum von einigen Monaten die transgender Gemeinschaft in Kapstadt, deren eigene Sprache oder Slang als ‚Gayle’ bezeichnet wird.

Eine Auswahl der Bilder werden nun erstmalig im Blyb. ausgestellt und zum Verkauf angeboten.

Die Ausstellungseröffnung am Montag, den 29. April, startet um 19 Uhr mit einem Künstlergespräch moderiert von Ed Greenacre und kurzer Präsentation in englisch.

RYAN JACOBS

Ryan wurde in Kapstadt, Südafrika geboren, wo er seine Karriere als Fotograf bei der Zeitung ‚The Cape Times‘ begann. Ryan hat Kriege und soziale Probleme im Nahen Osten und in Afrika dokumentiert. Seine Fotografien wurden in vielen Nachrichtenpublikationen veröffentlicht. Ryan lebt nun mit seiner Familie in Gmund.

KÜNSTLER STATEMENT

‚ I have never been unlucky enough to call myself an artist. As a photographer, the brief and job description have always been simple. Go, watch and then come back and tell people about it. It’s amazing how far a smile and “hello” in any language will get you.

This journey has taken me across battlefields, oceans and continents. Exhilarating, Fascinating and at times Terrifying and dark. If anything, my gifts have been to merely get along and more complicated than that, bear witness.

It has been these experiences which have led to new questions about ‘the other’, narratives on masculinity and identity,perspective and relativity, my self and the sheer power of joy. In addition to this, I wish to challenge traditional narratives and practices regarding Western-Centric representations of the Global South and the people who call it home.

I photograph to see, and maybe along the way, I can help others to do the same.’
