Photo series ‘Gayle’

We are delighted to be able to show our guests and visitors an exhibition in our public areas for the first time. It is a photo series of works by photographer Ryan Jacobs. As a documentary photographer who was born in Cape Town and has lived in Gmund since last summer, he is now part of the Blyb. Team.

The photo series ‘Gayle’ is not only a tribute to the LGBTQ+ community and a personal portrayal of Ryan Jacobs’ journey, but also to show our commitment and the Blyb’s stance for openness and tolerance. We also bear responsibility because the building was once the family and vacation home of one of the greatest Nazi criminals. The realization of such projects is intended to send a clear signal against racism and discrimination.

Backgrounds

Ryan Jacobs began his career as a photographer at ‘The Cape Times’ newspaper in his home country. He has documented wars and social problems in the Middle East and Africa. His photographs have been published in many news publications. His path led him back to South Africa after a big trip, where he gained access behind the scenes of the LGBTQ+ community in Cape Town in 2021 and documented it for a few months.

We are therefore pleased to make visible a part of its culture, which is based on openness and acceptance.

‘As photographer being invited into this space, my goal was to represent a section of my culture, focusing on radical acceptance, respect and dignity and joy as resistance. photograph who, not what.’ – Ryan Jacobs

‘Gayle’ is the name of the community’s own language, which has developed to protect people from homophobic, nationalist governments. The individual photographs are named after terms in Gayle.
